History

Slaying Mantis is my 3rd oldest design still in use and has gone through more radical changes than any other, it began as a grossly overweight robot with two sets of hydraulics and two sets of pnuematics, however the robot is now much more realistic, it is now a two wheel drive robot with a crusher and hidden weapons within the beak which allow damage to be done to an opponent internally or just to prevent it from escaping. It was also my first robot to win a tournement despite the fact it wasn't a major one.

STATS

Colour: Silver and green

Weight: 100kg

Shape: Frnot wedged to about 65% of the lenth then it begins to slope down again until it reaches a height of 42cm. The wheels are underneath the highest ridge of the main body. The edge of the top is chamfered and has triangular spikes, these serve a dual purpose of preventing the machine from landing on its side and making a robot that it up the wedge have more difficulty getting down. The robot from above is almost a square. It is about 1m long.

Wheels: 2 large inner wheel underneath the ridge made of toughened rubber. Spikes can be added if the surface means tht it is needed.
Motors: S28-400 magmotors at 36v.

Speed: 15mph,

Turning circle: 0m

Armour: 7mm aluminium boron carbide
Ground clearance: At the fron 0mm due to a spatula, the sides are skirted with 3mm abc and 7mm polycarb, under the skirts the clearnace is 2mm.

Weapons: Razer like crushing beak: made of stainless steel with the piercing point made from hardox for maximum effect. The point of the beak is hollow to fit one of the following mechanisms.

1) There is a small gear driven cam within the beak which after piercing the opponent can de moved outwards to prevent the opponent coming off the hook. SMD can then carry the opponent to wherever it wants and drop them at will. For example dropping them down the pit or over the side of the arena.

2) There is a small device which worked off an electric drill motor inside the beak, during piercing it is retracted however once the beak has pierced an opponent it can be extended down into the other machines to a length of 40cm: at the tip there are three scalpal blades prongs: when it spins it can cut wires inside: a similar system has been entered into robot wars before however it lacked any decent menas of getting insdie its opponent. If successful it can completly maim an opponent in one attack. It MUST be retracted before grip is released other wise it will become unusauble as it would proably bed. The rod it 5mm diameter tungsten.

Srimech: The claw acts as a srimech, the spikes act as a dual purpose of making a robot on top more difficult to get down and also prevent slaying mantis from landing on its sides.

Strengths: Weapon gives total controls over opponent and where they are dropped. Fast and difficult to damage

Weaknesses: Slow srimech if flipped: around 2.5 seconds.
